Spiral Wound Gaskets

Spiral wound gaskets are constructed from two circular rings of material, paralleling one another. One ring is made of metal, and the other is made of filler. The metal ring gives strength to the gasket, and is usually made of stainless steel or carbon. The filler material provides a tight seal. This makes joints easier to clamp without using great force. Some spiral wound gaskets contain rings at the center and on the inside. Spiral wound gaskets are more resilient, due to the rebound action of their springs. These gaskets also feature a high resistance to caustic and corrosive substances.

Due to their high reliability, spiral wound gaskets are used as seals in difficult and critical situations. They are relied upon by the petrochemical, manufacturing, chemical, and refinery industries because they are far superior to ordinary gaskets. Spiral wound gaskets are used in machines with high temperature and high pressure operating conditions such as heat exchangers, boiler handholds, flanged joints, and manholes in huge machinery. They are also used in engine room operations and waste gas processing, which require extended operations at temperatures exceeding 500 degrees Centigrade. Conventional gaskets would become deformed or deteriorate rapidly under these conditions while spiral wound gaskets hold up.

These high temperature gaskets use special heat-withstanding materials such as mica-reinforced steel. These gaskets are capable of operating at up to 900 degrees Centigrade without deteriorating. The can also withstand pressures of up to five times the normal atmospheric pressure.
