Stainless steel fittings connect tubing sections, straight pipes, and pipe branch-offs; they also fulfill many other functions. The many types of stainless steel fittings include elbows, reducers, unions, couplings, crosses, tees, olets, barbs, nipple plugs, valves, and caps. These stainless steel fittings are typically threaded to connect with pipes, fixtures, and other fittings. However, soldering can make another kind of joint. By applying flux to the inner sleeve of a sleeve joint, solder is drawn through (by capillary action) when heated with a propane torch. Stainless steel fittings can also be connected by welding and brazing.
Stainless steel pipe fittings are useful in many applications because of their high tolerance to corrosive substances like acids and oils. Many industries use piped products and require stainless steel fittings and nipples: natural gas processors and distributors, petroleum refineries, petrochemical plants, and chemical manufacturers. Stainless steel nipples are a special type of fitting. These short pieces of pipe typically feature two male threads at their ends to help connect two pieces of pipe. Stainless steel nipples may feature a hexagonal section at their centers so they can be easily grasped with a wrench when tightening or loosening this joint. The length of the threaded section specifies the length of the nipple. A close nipple will not show any unthreaded area; when completely closed, very little of these stainless steel nipples remain exposed.
One advantage of using stainless steel fittings and nipples is that they provide excellent resistance to corrosion, thermal variation, ultraviolet ray action, mechanical shock, and fire.
