There are three main parts of a pipe valve: the "seat", an outer assembly made of metal or plastic; the "body", a soft inner portion (made of rubber or plastic) which opens and closes the valve; and a control mechanism (such as a hand lever) for opening and closing the valve.

Many types of pipe valves are available: check valves, ceramic disc valves, choke valves, ball valve, and butterfly valves. Pressure-reducing valves, globe valves, gate valves, safety valves, stopcocks (or "cocks"), ball cocks, flow control valves, and sampling valves are also available.
