Hoffmeyer Company, Inc., manufacturer and distributor of conveyor belting and conveyor components, industrial & hydraulic hose and couplings, gaskets, packings & seals, sheet rubber, and other industrials products, evolved from the 1986 merger of two pioneer Bay area firms: Hoffmeyer Corp. and Cook Rubber Co. Oakland industrialist Albert J. Hoffmeyer founded Hoffmeyer Belting and Supply Company in 1921. During the 1920's and 1930's, the firm was a major supplier of leather power transmission belting which, amazingly, could transmit up to 1400 h.p. By the 1940's Hoffmeyer had broadened the product line and initiated a growth cycle that increased sales volume by 600 percent in the 1950's and 1960's. In subsequent years, Hoffmeyer moved to meet the growing demands of the food canning and food processing industries and other companies in the area. Matthew M. Cook, a San Francisco sea captain who traded in leather and tallow, founded M.M. Cook & Son in 1860 (only 16 years after rubber was first vulcanized). However, the lure of the sea proved too strong, and Captain Cook turned the business over to his son, Horatio Nelson Cook. Horatio changed the firm's name to H.N. Cook Belting Company and soon won lucrative contracts supplying leather hose, leather belting and leather fire buckets to the City of San Francisco and Mother Lode towns. Eventually, H.N. Cook Belting supplied major sugar mills, lumber companies, cement plants and other industries throughout the West and Hawaii. Hoffmeyer and Cook continued to grow and adapt to changing times until recognizing that together they could offer an even wider range of services and products. The companies merged and moved into new headquarters at 1600 Factor Avenue, San Leandro in 1986. Hoffmeyer continues to offer its customers a complete line of products.
